Oamaru and the Waitaki District

Oamaru is the largest town in the Waitaki District, and is famous for the world’s rarest penguins, the yellow-eyed penguins (hoiho), the little blue penguins colony, rare seabirds that call Oamaru home and the limestone architecture of the Victorian Precinct – but that’s just the beginning of what the town has to offer.

Living in Oamaru

Oamaru is the largest town in the Waitaki District and is thought to be one of the next boom towns that will go off in the coming years as people trend to move away from the big cities.

We are becoming more diverse. With more than 200 families moving to Oamaru, Waitaki’s largest town in recent decades, Pasifika people now make up 20% of Oamaru’s 13,000 people, compared to Auckland’s 15%.
